Coloured sand alike can be used in play or any art and crafts activity. It is very flexible and easy to create. Furthermore, it is much more cheaper than real
sand. You can use salt that is long-lasting and easy to get in any supermarket.

Coloured Sand Alike

Learning Framework

  • Physical - Fine motor skill- rubbing the coloured gel to the salt to create even colour.

  • Intellectual - Observing the changes of how the coloured gel is being mixed by the hand movement of rubbing.

  • Emotional - Engagement as children will be engross on the rubbing procedure and ensure all the salt are coloured.

  • Social - Children will be able to name the colour of the "sand", the texture, the smell and the taste. Parents can use either fine or coarse salt for this coloured sand alike activity.

Materials

With a spoon, divide 3kg into different portions (according to the number of colours you want) and put them into separate zip bags.

Step 3

Zip the bag and have your child rub the bag so that the colour is evenly mixed. This will take about a minute. Leave the coloured salt to dry for 2 – 4 hours.

  • Fine or coarse salt

  • Food colouring

  • Zip bags

  • Spoon

Step 2

Place a few drops of food colouring into the bag.

Step 4

Repeat the steps for the other colours. The coloured salt can be used for art and crafts and can be kept in containers for months.
