Candlelight

Updated: Dec 29, 2021

What keeps a fire lit? Is it the wax, the wick or something else? Help your child discover the wonder of fire.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Suitable For: 5-6 years old

Estimated Time: < 15 mins

Environment: Indoors

Materials:

  • Notebook

  • Candle

  • Pencil

  • Lighter

  • Glass jar

Step 1:

Light the candle with a lighter. Ask your child to note down what they observe.

Step 2:

Blow out the candle and record the results. Records can take the form of notes and drawings.

Step 3:

Light the candle again, but this time, cover the candle with a glass jar. Ensure the jar is big enough to reach the base of the candle.

Step 4:

Ask your child to observe what happens to the candle and describe or record what they see. Encourage discussion about the observations and end the session by listing important points derived from the records.
