SG50 BOOK LAUNCH INVITATION

Updated: Dec 29, 2021

The weather could not have been more perfect at the Kolam Ayer ABC Waterfront on the evening of 25 July. A cool breeze cheered everyone, as young and old strolled on the waterfront between Blk 63 Kallang Bahru and Blk 38 Bendemeer Road to enjoy the myriad events at the Kallang River. The highlight was the Moulmein-Kallang GRC and Whampoa SMC SG50 Community Mass Poem Reading, which was held in conjunction with the Kolam Ayer PAssionArts Festival and Mass Sing-Along 2015.

Two books were also launched at the event. The first, Harry Builds A Nation, is the last in a series of three books on the life and legacy of Singapore’s founding prime minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. The second, The Birthday Party, is a book to celebrate Singapore’s 50thbirthday. It tells the story of a boy who, upon receiving an invitation to a mysterious birthday party, embarks on a journey that takes him — and the friends he then meets — past famous local landmarks, which are further explored in a fact-finding finale! The Birthday Party is a simple and easy-to-read book for preschoolers. It was given free to all children at the event who signed up for a colouring competition.

Mr Patrick Yee, the illustrator, launched both books with an on-the-spot sketch of the late Mr Lee and then presented the books to the Guests-of-honour, Minister Yaccob Ibrahim, Minister Lui Teck Yew, Senior Minister of State Mr Heng Chee How, Mayor Denise Phua and Moulmein-Kallang Town Council Chairman Mr Edwin Tong.
