Celebrate Memories of Our Preschool Days: My Kindergarten Teacher and I - A SG50 project

Updated: Dec 29, 2021

AECES and Preschool Market are honoured to be collaborating on this SG50 Celebration Fund project – Celebrate the memories of our preschool days - <My Kindergarten Teacher and I>. We started our call for submissions in end September and were encouraged by the public and schools who shared their precious memories with us. Many thanks to all who sent in their memories and also to Singapore Memory Project for the use of the photos in their database.

With the memories collected, we devised 3 memorabilia, - a photobook, a video and a photowall - each with its own unique angle on the walk down the memory lane.the photobook showcases images with captions of preschool days from the 1950s to 1990s and also a section on the factors that keep long-serving educators’ passion for the sector. We are honoured to have Mr Eugene Leong, CEO of Early Childhood Development Agency to pen the Foreword for us. the video showcases captions and interviews of teachers who have been teaching for more than 20 years and also shows how some of them kept close ties with their students. The photowall groups the memories in themes such as classroom settings, graduation concerts, excursions and games. There is also a section where participants of the Appreciation Lunch finale could pen down their memories of their preschool days. The Appreciation Lunch was held on 14 November 2015 in conjunction with AECES' workshop - Creating Receptive Learners. We were heartened to have contributors and long serving early childhood educators gathered at the lunch to get-together and view the 3 memorabilia together.

It was a heartwarming afternoon where old friends gathered and ties were renewed. Our Guest of Honour, Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon shared from her own experience as a veteran in the field and exhorted the teachers to continue the good work they are doing. We are very moved by her passion as she came for the event in spite of a fractured leg.

Indeed, this project evoked our fond memories and love for our kindergarten teachers who have made an impact in our lives. From the stories shared, we saw how preschool teachers built a strong foundation for our children and us; they not only imparted academic knowledge but also the values and learning dispositions that are important for successful lives.

As Mr Eugene Leong said in his Foreword, “ (we) hope that these shared stories will touch the hearts of many, and inspire more passionate educators to join the sector to give our children a good start.”

If any of you have a good story on preschools to share, please write to us at ideas@preschoolmarket.com.
